Avexa is engaged in the development and commercialization of anti-infective pharmaceutical programs and projects.  Avexa's principal research programs focus on the discovery of innovative medicines for the treatment of the diseases caused by:

 - Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

 - Vancomycin- and methicillin-resistant bacteria.


Its lead program is apricitabine (ATC), which is in phase III trials. Apricitabine is nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The phase III study is conducted in 130 specialist HIV centers in 15 countries. This drug is targetd at 2nd, 3rd and 4th line therapy for cases of drug resiatnce to other treatment modalities. 

The company’s other HIV focus, an integrase program, focuses to identify compounds, which inhibit HIV integrase, the enzyme for inserting the viral genome into the host cell deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). 

Its antibacterial program is focused on identifying compounds with antibacterial activity against antibiotic-resistant micro-organisms. A lead molecule, AVX13616, is selected for pre-clinical testing.
